Lately I have been quite obsessed with DIY face masks and scrubs that I can create myself in the comfort of my own home. Don’t get me wrong, going to the shops to search for all kinds of weird and wonderful face goodies is always fun and something I will forever love to do! But when you’re at home and feeling like a little pamper, though you may not have any ready-made face masks in your beauty box, you can always scratch in the kitchen cupboards for ingredients you have lying around and make your own!
I have recently tried my hand at a few different ones, targeting different concerns, and I thought it would be something interesting to share. Especially if you are on a budget, then these ideas will most likely come in handy! I know for quite a lot of people DIY pampering is something enjoyable to do – either with friends or even during that much needed alone time – and it’s great because you can control exactly what goes onto your skin…
YOGHURT AND SUGAR MIXTURE
Apparently yoghurt is a natural exfoliant. I honestly had no idea. Firstly, it’s smooth, so it’s not as if it’s a dead giveaway! And secondly, it’s primary purpose is eating, so it’s not something that would be general knowledge to most people – I would assume. Maybe I’ve just been living under a rock? Let me know… 😝 After researching a bit further I understand that it’s because of the lactic acid in the yoghurt. Anyway, it also helps with brightening and hydrating the skin. Two very important functions that I look for in masks, particularly as the weather becomes colder and drier! As for the sugar, I immediately know that it’s a natural exfoliant because of its fine particles that can be used to scrub away dead skin. It seemed to make complete sense to me that you would add these two useful – and natural – ingredients together to create something simple, yet effective, for your skin.
All it requires is:
- One tablespoon yoghurt (I used plain Greek yoghurt)
- One teaspoon sugar
Mix them together in a bowl and there you have it! It ends up more creamy than exfoliator-like.
I ended up making too much for my face, so just use your initiative when it comes to your tablespoon full of yoghurt! I applied it to my entire face, making sure that each area had a good amount. Then I set my phone timer for 15 minutes and I left it on. The yoghurt was slightly drier when the 15 minutes were up, but it just created a more creamy texture on my face, which I didn’t mind at all.
Before I washed it off, I rubbed my face in gentle circular motions to get a slightly stronger exfoliation with the sugar. And only then did I rinse my face with warm water. The result was beautiful and glowy, and I could immediately see that my skin looked refreshed and brighter! I guess the mixture of the yoghurt and sugar is successful in removing dead and dry skin.
HONEY AND SUGAR MIXTURE
The other recipe I tried last week was a honey and sugar mask. This one I didn’t actually leave on for long, but instead I used it as an actual exfoliator after I had cleansed my face.
What you need:
- One tablespoon raw honey
- One teaspoon sugar
- A few drops of lemon juice (optional)
The addition of sugar in DIY face masks is great for unclogging pores and the honey includes vitamins and minerals, plus it is an antiseptic. As you can see, both ingredients have amazing benefits for the skin. This mask came out quite a lot stiffer than the yoghurt one, but that’s understandable because of the honey. I applied the mixture to my cleansed face and rubbed it in circular motions too. I did this for about two minutes and then rinsed it off. The result was smoother and brighter skin, which allowed my makeup to glide on effortlessly afterwards! I absolutely loved it.
COFFEE AND ORANGE JUICE MIXTURE
The last DIY exfoliator mask I’ve tried is the coffee and orange juice one. When I first heard of this mixture I was a little bit grossed out, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Coffee is a loved ingredient for skin because it has anti-inflammatory properties that help with making the skin appear more awake. Hence why people drink coffee in the morning: to wake up! The orange juice is an incredible source of vitamin C, which is also SO good for our skin!
You will need:
- One tablespoon coffee
- Orange juice
Slowly add the orange juice to the coffee granules until you get the consistency you desire. It’s up to you, but you don’t want to make it so liquid that it runs off your face! Just add enough juice to make a good paste. I applied the mixture and left it on for about 15 minutes, and then I rinsed it off with warm water. Once again my skin was left feeling clean and brighter.
